I wish I had pictures to post from our 4th of July celebration but our night didn't turn out like we had planned. To set you up for the story......Kyle has been talking about fireworks since Halloween. This is amazing because Kyle loves holidays, well, only holidays that involve candy. So 4th of July shouldn't even be on his radar. Anyway, we bought fireworks last week and he'd get them out every day and display them on our piano, admire them, arrange them, talk about them, etc.
We spent the day in Payson at Grandma Clark's house eating BBQ, playing croquet, badminton and running through the sprinkler. The long anticipated hour of 8:00 pm finally came and we began with poppers and sparklers. We had just begun smoke bombs when Kyle felt a tiny single rain drop and ran screaming into the house. (More background info...Kyle is deathly afraid of anything that produces a loud noise (i.e. lawnmowers, vacuums, radio controlled cars) so you can see that lightning not only produces a loud noise but can kill you. If you are Kyle you believe that it will kill you no matter what. We've talked about lightning rods and the safety of being in a car or house but it does not matter when you have such a powerful fear.)
Needless to say I retrieved Kyle and told him we haven't seen one lightning bolt yet and convinced him to come out holding my hand. He stepped out for a few seconds but ran back into the house crying. We did this more than a few times, meanwhile Jeff is lighting fireworks as fast as he can because there actually was quite a big storm rolling in from Santaquin.
Kyle didn't know whether to be more upset about the chance of being struck by lightning or that he was missing the fireworks he'd waited so long to enjoy. We finally set half of what we had left aside for the 24th and convinced him to view the rest from the open doorway of the house. He did get to see a few more before the wind picked up so violently it was blowing over the fireworks.
We hastily gathered up the garbage and leftover fireworks and ran in the house before it got worse. Kyle now refused to get in the car during the storm so I had to pick him up (he's a big boy if you didn't know that already) and carry him kicking to the van. We said our Thanks and Sorrys to Grandma and Grandpa and took our fun circus home. We now pray that the weekend of the 24th will be storm free or we'll have to break the law so Kyle can enjoy his Holiday. (whew that was a long story!!)
